The New York Air National Guard says one of it's reaper drone aircraft has crashed into Lake Ontario this afternoon.

The Guard says the MQ-9 Reaper took off on a routine training mission from Wheeler Sack Airfield at Fort Drum and was being piloted by staff at the 174th Attack Wing in Mattydale.

The drone went down on the eastern end of Lake Ontario about 1:00 Tuesday afternoon.

The Guard says there were no weapons on board the craft and was flying in approved military training airspace over the lake.

No word on what went wrong, but the National Guard says they are now working closely with the US Coast Guard in an attempt to retrieve the craft from the water.

The MQ-9 Reaper is a medium to high altitude, long endurance remotely piloted aircraft. It's primary mission is to act on intelligence and surveillance missions.
