A crowd of hundreds gathered in Auburn to pay their respects to Army Staff Sgt. Francis Phillips IV, as his funeral procession traveled along South Street en route to the funeral home.
Phillips died May 4 when his armored vehicle was destroyed by an improvised bomb in Afghanistan. Phillips grew up in California, but moved to the Auburn area about 10 years ago. A large number in the crowd were either current or former members of the military who snapped to attention as the hearse passed by.
Calling hours for Philips are from 4 until 7 today at Farrell's Funeral Service in Auburn, and the funeral will be tomorrow at 7 pm at the United Methodist Church in Auburn.
