(Cicero, NY) – Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that sheriff’s detectives arrested a man Saturday evening for assaulting a 3 year old. Detectives also arrested the child’s mother with Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
On Friday, June 28, sheriff’s deputies responded to 8064 Thompson Rd in the Town of Cicero regarding an unconscious 3 year old. Upon arrival, deputies found a 3 year old that was in and out of consciousness being treated by NAVAC personnel. The 3 year old had extensive bruising and marks on his body. The child’s mother, Amanda Bishop (27), 8064 Thompson Rd, was also on scene with her two other children (ages 7 and 10) and Bishop’s live-in boyfriend, John Bonitz (27). The 3 year old was transported by ambulance to University Hospital. Upon further investigation, deputies learned that the 7 and 10 year old had several bruises to the body. Child Protective Services took custody of the 7 and 10 year old.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Detectives discovered that John Bonitz intentionally punched and kicked the 3 year old causing internal injuries to the child. Bonitz was arrested by detectives on Saturday, June 29, and charged with the felony of Assault in the 2nd degree and the misdemeanor of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Bonitz was arraigned in the T/O Cicero court and is currently being held in the Justice Center in lieu of $50,000.00 cash or $100,000.00 bond.
