Syracuse, N.Y. - A Civil War document signed by President Abraham Lincoln has been sold in Syracuse.

“All it did was hang in a hallway in a home,” explains why Grissons’s great, great, great granddaughter Sedona Brown decided to auction the piece. “I’m very much a history buff and I like the idea of sharing this little piece of history with others.”

The commission letter, also signed by then-Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, sold for $4,700.
