Syracuse has been recognized by a national organization as a top destination for college students.

University Hill Corporation, a coalition of the neighborhood's institutions and organizations, say the poll from the American Institute of Economic Research was an objective ranking based on a number of key criteria covering academic environment, quality of life, and professional opportunity. Syracuse was ranked along with other cities in the Small Metro designation, including populations from 250,000 to 1 million. Also on the Top 20 list was Albany and Binghamton.

The ranking is part of the AIER's College Destinations Index, which measured the informal learning environment and lifestyle opportunities in 229 metropolitan statistical areas in the United States.
