Rosemond Gifford Zoo is expecting - two new elephants.

Zoo director Ted Fox says Asian elephants Mali, who's 17 and 19-year-old Kirina are both pregnant.  They've been with the zoo since the mid 1990's.  The father is Doc, who's been with the zoo just since 2012.  Doc's addition was a conscious effort to introduce new and unrelated bloodline to the herd, and followed the opening of the zoo's Asian Elephant Preserve exhibit.

Typical gestation for elephants is 22 months, with a 2-month window either way.  Fox says females giving birth before, like Mali, typically go to term while new mothers like Kirina will give birth a bit early.  Veterinarians from Cornell will supervise the pregnancies and will be on hand for the births.
