My personal take on this: I think if you fight your kids on how they feel and identify it will come back to get you. They have to work stuff out on their own. Who they are is who they are. At 3 years old, for example, they are just starting to learn that. I wouldn't worry too much about them identifying as anything. They aren't going to become something if you do or don't it. They are who they are and will figure out on their own despite you.
My little boy wears pink sneakers… ya know that means? He likes pink sneakers. Regardless of who he becomes in life I will love him and support him.
My parents always told me all they can hope for is that I grow up trying my best, and that I do what I can to be a good, loving person. Same applies for son.
