NFL Hall of Famee and retired Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly says he will receive the Jimmy V Award next month at the ESPYs ceremony. Kelly made that announcement during his annual golf tournament in Batavia, NY. ESPN hasn't confirmed the news, but an official announcement is expected soon.
The 58-year-old Kelly is being recognized after being diagnosed with cancer three times in the past five years. He first had surgery to remove squamous-cell carcinoma in his jaw in 2013, and later underwent chemotherapy in 2014 when the cancer returned in his maxillary sinus. He most recently underwent surgery in March of this year, to remove oral cancer and reconstruct his upper jaw. In June, he will undergo a follow-up surgery and will not be able to eat solid foods until September.
The Jimmy V Award is named for basketball coach Jimmy Valvano -- who died of cancer in 1993. And it is presented to athletes who overcome great obstacles through perseverance
