It wasn't a Super weekend in the place where I went to college. For the third time in less than a year, a driver hit the fountain in the middle of Main St. in Geneseo Saturday afternoon.
The poor little fountain is jinxed!
This time 37-year-old Ryan Sweeney of Springville, NY scraped the fountain while attempting to make a left turn from Center St. onto Main. Somehow Mr. Sweeney clipped the foundation and fled the scene, only to be apprehended a short time later by Geneseo cops. He was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.
The fountain was first struck by a milk truck last April which toppled the iconic bronze bear atop the fountain. The bear is still being restored and is set to return to its perch this summer.
A pickup truck nailed the same fountain in November. I attended college just down the hill from this fountain. It never was struck in the four years I was there, and never since, until April 2016. Now, it's hit the trifecta in less than one year with three different drivers having a close encounter.
Perhaps the bear may want to re-think its choice of where to live. Seems the fountain is a tempting target for wayward drivers in Livingston County.
