Two local World War II vets met when the world was a different place, and this week a kid from Geneva, NY met the family of his war buddy from Syracuse.
Onofrio Zicari grew up down the street in Geneva. Before he was shipped off to the beaches of Normandy, France, he met Donald Simmons. Their bond from the Finger Lakes region was strong, and came full circle when ABC News profiled their friendship during the lead up to the ceremonies honoring the 75th invasion of Normandy.
Simmons family was watching the story in the 'Cuse, and their reunion with the gentle Geneva hero follows.
I've included both reports below, beginning with the original which led to the touching reunion. Please watch and remember how kids from our area fought to keep our flag strong, as we commemorate Flag Day this Friday, June 14th.
God bless all our heroes from our area and beyond who have served for our flag and freedom.,
