Is Cheesecake A Pie Or A Cake?

For all of us with a sweet tooth, one of the best parts of the holidays is filling up on all the desserts that family and friends have brought to the dinner table. Whether your vice of choice is pie, cake, or ice cream- who can resist a sweet treat at the end of a holiday meal?

If you're looking for some harmless banter before you indulge in your favorite dessert, an argument arose on the TODAY Show over what kind of dessert a cheesecake was: is it a cake? Is it a pie? Or is it something else entirely?

This one stumped me. I firmly believe all pies should have a crust that comes up to the sides, and that cakes must have flour in them. And though some cheesecakes have crusts that go up on the sides... they're not really crusts, it's just a bunch of crushed cookies congealed with butter. But some pies have graham cracker or other non-traditional crusts... so I'm at a loss.
