An extreme heat warning is in effect for Onondaga County today (Monday, June 23), as temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-to-high 90s, with a heat index reaching or exceeding 100 degrees. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the advisory, which will remain in place from 10 a.m. this morning until 8 p.m. tomorrow night.

According to the NWS, the combination of high temperatures and humidity could make the air feel as hot as 105 degrees. This rare heat event poses a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working outdoors or without access to air conditioning.

The heat warning covers several counties in Upstate New York, including Onondaga, Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Sullivan, and Tioga. Syracuse is expected to experience record-breaking temperatures, with Monday's high predicted to reach 97 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 92 degrees set on this day.

Residents are urged to stay indoors as much as possible, keep hydrated, and follow heat safety guidelines. Schools in the Syracuse and East Syracuse Minoa districts will dismiss students early due to the extreme heat, although air-conditioned high schools will maintain regular schedules.
