Central New York residents will face scorching temperatures today (July 24) as the National Weather Service forecasts a return of high heat and humidity. Feels-like temperatures are expected to range between 90 and 105 degrees, raising concerns about heat-related illnesses. According to Syracuse.com, the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has issued alerts to prepare residents for the heat.

A heat advisory is in effect for several counties, including Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, and Tompkins, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service warns that hot temperatures combined with high humidity can lead to heat illnesses. They advise residents to stay hydrated and seek shade whenever possible.

Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed concern over the extreme heat, emphasizing that this is not a typical summer week. NCC News reports that cooling centers have been set up across Central New York, including in Thornden Park, Syracuse, to help residents stay cool. Meteorologist Kate Thornton advises using cool rags and ice water to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The high temperatures are expected to continue, with Syracuse potentially breaking records. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the latest forecasts and alerts available at noaa.gov.
